Joan's on Third with Eric and Biscuit the Poodle (who needs donations!!)
Joan’s on Third is a family owned and operated Gourmet Marketplace, Café and Full Service Catering and Event Planning Company.
Joan, originally from New York, spent years in the kitchen working with Dione Lucas. She ran Lucas’s cooking school as well as owning her own restaurant in Manhattan, before coming out west to raise a family. Joan’s on Third first opened its doors in 1995 as a catering company.
Joan’s older daughter, Carol, joined her mother in the business after attending Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. Carol has been indispensible to her mother in making Joan’s on Third the caterer of choice in Los Angeles: from planning parties and creating menus to her impeccable attention to detail. The L.A. scene, brimming with special events and film premieres, was the perfect arena for Joan’s on Third to establish its culinary reputation for serving comfort food in a sophisticated setting.
In 1998, an adjacent storefront on then-sleepy Third Street became available and Joan’s lifelong dream of opening a gourmet foods marketplace and café came true. Joan transformed a narrow retail space into a charming gourmet take-away. Over the years, Joan’s on Third has evolved into a culinary emporium, offering an extensive selection of cheeses, olives, freshly baked pastries and carefully selected gourmet retail items from around the world. The thriving café has become a haven for people seeking Joan’s signature sandwiches, salads, soups and seasonally inspired foods.
Susie, Joan’s younger daughter, joined her mother and sister after graduating from Georgetown University’s School of Business in 1998. Susie devotes her energy to running the Marketplace - - hiring and training the staff, making sure Joan’s new hires truly do live up to the family name. Susie has incorporated Joan’s love of family and friends into a signature style of service. After working together for several years, Susie married Chester Hastings, a talented chef from San Francisco whom Joan had met and hired in 1997. Today, Chester works closely with Joan, developing new recipes and sharing creative ideas with Joan everyday.
As partners in this culinary adventure, Joan and her family travel the world. From huge trade fairs to tiny trattorias and charcuteries, they are always looking for great new products and exciting ideas; inspiring each other to great heights of culinary creativity. They eat everything, everywhere, in a lifelong celebration of food. It’s a family affair!
After 10 years, in September 2007, Joan’s on Third expanded. With the gleaming marble counters, white tile floors, antique communal table and the hustle and bustle (all reminiscent of Joan’s NY roots), Joan now offers her signature omelettes for breakfast, an abundant grab & go selection of salads, dips & dressings, and a lot more space to take it all in. Today, one will find Joan living out her lifelong dream of entertaining and feeding family, friends & neighbors all in the comfort of her warm & inviting “kitchen.”
